My first 15km run

After having a few days rest to let my blister heal up some more I continued on with my training plan today and conquered my first ever 15km run. I felt awesome running into Manly and was pleased to se that I was probably going to get my fastest ever 5km time (helped by the big downhill) and close to my best 10km time. Not counting when I stopped to go to the loo, I think I achieved that too but it isn’t recorded that way so I am still chasing the elusive 60 min mark officially. Sadly I had a few problems on this run. At around the 6-7km point I could feel my big toes getting sore, my right one especially. I suspected I may have a couple of black toe nails at the end of this run and I wasn’t wrong. They became more painful throughout but I could deal with that. What I couldn’t deal with was the pain that occurred after I landed on my left foot wrong on a sloping pathway coming up the last big hill. I still had about 4km to go at this point and the pain in my knee was so bad I had to stop a few times and walk a lot of the uphill. I think I must have jarred it when I landed wrong. I found I could run a little bit by running on the grass rather than the footpath and just walked when the pain became too much. Closer to home I found that my knee wasn’t hurting as badly so I slowly jogged the rest of the way home. I was disappointed though because I was aiming for 1.5hrs and I was a bit slower than that due to the pace over the last 4km.

So the conclusion from this run was that I need to get bigger shoes. I am going to get new pairs a full size up for distances over 5km, and keep my current shoes for the shorter distances. I also need to run on the grass more over longer distances so it is less jarring on my knees.  I am quite sore now and both my big toenails are going black. I think I am also going to have to start painting my toe nails for a while!

Edited to Add: I checked the size of my Orange Nike Lunar Racers and clearly I stuffed up when I bought them as I have only just discovered that these are a EUR 39 when my pink ones (which I have never had any problems in) are EUR 40. My stuff up. So i will get a new pair of shoes but in the same size as my pink ones and hopefully I won’t have any more toe nail problems.
